ある日ホッチのオフィスを１人の捜査官が訪れる。彼女の名はエミリー・プレンティス。ホッチが新人時代に警護についた大使の令嬢で、その後ＦＢＩに入局し、10年のキャリアを積んでいた。その彼女が「ＢＡＵに移動に異動になった」と言う。何も聞いていないホッチは「間違いだ」と一蹴し、２人の連続殺人犯に悩まされているセントルイスに出張に向かう。
