2005年8月。カトリーナ台風に直撃される直前のニューオーリンズで３件の連続殺人が発生。被害者はいずれも男性で、ノドを切られ、内臓を抜き出されていた。手がかりは犯人から担当刑事のラモンテーンの元に送られていた手紙。ラモンテーンは避難も忘れて自宅で捜査資料をひっくり返していたが、あることに気づいたその時、窓から飛び込んできた大木に当たって死亡。だが死ぬ間際に壁に「ジョーンズ」という文字を書き残す。
悲劇とは、生きる者が知恵を得るための道具である。生きるための道しるべではない。
