ペンシルベニア州ピッツバーグで、ダンスパーティ会場の火災により14人の少年少女が死亡するという痛ましい事件が起きる。ところがその後３ヵ月の間に犠牲者の親が５人、相次いで自殺。５人目の死者ポール・ベイルマンの兄で刑事のロニーは弟が自殺したとは考えられず、他殺ではないかと疑いJJに捜査協力を依頼する。
