2004年、ヴァージニア州ロアノークで林野局の職員マトロフは、ジョギング中の若い女性を次々と３人殺害。ホッチやモーガンのプロファイリングによって逮捕状が出るが、警察が踏み込んだ時に屋上に逃げ、転落して昏睡状態に陥る。４年後に意識が回復し、検事のシシ・ヒレンブランドは有罪に持ち込もうとするが、唯一の目撃者は既に他界しており、何よりもマトロフ本人が一切の記憶を失っていた。ホッチたちは有罪の決め手を探るべく、再びプロファイリングに乗り出す。
