コロラド州デンバーで一家惨殺事件が相次いで３件発生。場所はいずれも閑静な住宅街で、両親が惨殺され、子供は鎮静剤の大量注射で安楽死。殺害方法が２種類にハッキリ分かれているため、ホッチたちは犯人が２人組だと推理。そうこうするうちに４件目の事件が発生。被害者一家の長女キャリーが、初めての生存者として保護される。
